Okay, we got a new bumper for the rear of my 71 fury. We have it all taken off except for the fact that it is being held in by the wires that run into it for the bulbs..and we can not figure out how to get them out at all......Should we just snip them and replace the bulb housings? The bumper we got looks like whoever took them out got frustrated as well and dinged up the lightbulb housing holes. How do they pop out?? Here are some pics of what I am talking about. We literally had to break the old tail light lens to get in there.
Here are the wires that run to the bulbs. How the heck are these stupid things supposed to come off? I know on my Intrepid, they just twist out..but there is a little more to these old things. Any Help would be much appreciated. Also, does anyone know how I can make the sidemarker lenses from the 70 Sport Fury's that actually say "SPORT FURY" on them half amber/white fit into the 71 housings? Or do I have to buy the housings too and fabricate them to work?

Unplug the tail light lenses from the trunk wiring harness and feed the signal lens wires through the holes in the rear panel. The license plate wire un plugs as well.

Typically, they are attached to the bumper by philips head screws. The wires DO NOT twist out. Check The taillamp assemblies from the inside for screws. Smashing the lenses was a stupid thing--nobody reproduces them.NOS ones are not cheap. They are also held in by screws on the outside of the lense.look closely.I already see one in your first pic!! You may find the main screws once the lenses are removed. Somebody chime in if I am wrong. Just going by memory.

The Sport Fury had a different fender than a regular fury in 70. Had a larger opening for the Sport fury Front side markers....all the other Fury's used the same thin side marker as the rear.
I guess you could open up the opening in the front fender & make it fit, so yes you would need the whole housing from a Sport Fury.

Ok, those lights are a PITA to pull out, you need to unscrew the housing I wound up replacing all my screws and a few easy-outs getting my light bevels off. make sure you either fab or get some replacement weather stripping or you'll find water collect in your tail light assembly. The wires are grommited into the trunk wall. I think my first time exploring how the hell to get the things off I got a couple of milk crates.. pulled the bumper off and rested it on the crates so I could see the backside and work with what was there. I don't recall how it was all connected. I think the original installation was something to the effect of they were soldered into place and heat shrinked after the trunk grommits were in place. Don't quote me on that. I'll have to take a look at it again when I get home. Try to break as little as possible.. look for screw heads and places that provide resistance when you try to move it out of its existing place... figure out how to go from point A to point B.

oh, and those side markers, are a PITA... getting them to line up correctly and stay flush with the body is the hardest thing i've had to do with my fury.. and i'm in the middle of pulling the effing engine.

@ 68Cbarge: I'd have thought the sockets were just a press fit in the tail light housing and could be wiggled out. But I never tried it, so you're probably right.
@ 71Fun: The shop manual says:
1. Disconnect lamp lead from harness in trunk and pass lead through body.
2. Remove rear bumper.
3. Remove four screws attaching lamp assembly to bumper and drop assembly down and out.
The screws mentioned above are on the back, holding the taillight housing to the bumper from behind. They are not identical to the eight screws that hold the taillight lens and bezel and which can be removed from outside.

Okay guys, I got everything out today. I had to pry the freaking sockets out with a flathead screwdriver. Anyways...now that I am at the point of no return...Do they sell replacement sockets? And on a serious note, does anyone have the sidemarker housings for these:
